My FIRST post!

Wow!!!!
Iv thought about starting a blog for a year now and finally just found myself starting it on a whim tonight.  So here they are, my first thoughts on my new blog called Sew what!  I like the title it kinda has an attitude.

I love using the word sew instead of so.  Its kinda Corney, but I don't care its fun.

This is the beginning of my 4th year teaching sewing  and I just love it.  Its about sew much more than making something with fabric and a sewing machine.  I see the self esteem blossom in girls and women of all ages all the time.  There's allot to be said about creating something with your own hands, it's just self empowering.

I tell my students that the journey of a project is just as important as the finished project its self.  You have to enjoy the process every step of the way when you sew or its just work.  I love seeing how I can best complete each step when I'm making something.  I'm trying to instill patients and detail into my students minds so they will take pride in every element they create.

My students are really surprised at how much ironing or pressing is involved in sewing.  I actually felt kinda sorry for some of my younger girls this past spring when we were making curtains.  Those little girls would stand at the iron for half the class some times pressing and accurately measuring all the hems and headers of their curtains.  BUT!  they became much quicker and more proficient with the iron and the seam gauge because of it.  And their curtains turned out fantastic too!!!!

In January I started a semester in Home Decorating projects for all my classes. They made pillow cases, accent pillows, large pillow shams, curtains and place mats with napkins.  Even though everyone was making the same projects, It was sew fun to see how everyones personalities came through in their fabric choices.  Fabric is like candy to me, I can never get enough LOL.

This summer they made little twirly skirts, and pajama bottoms.  Others made really cool tote/school bags.  My advanced girls are still in the process of making  school back packs.  They are allot of work but will be one of kind when they are finished.  I just finished a black and red back pack for one of my sons.  He just loved it.

All my students start designing on a blank piece of paper.  I love the look in their eyes when I say now its time to draw what you want your bag or back pack to look like.  Some get really exited and others are like, you want me to what?  They've never thought about the  possibilities of designing a bag just to fit their own personal needs.  The we go through the list, what do you carry, what size are the items, and then design pockets and sections to fit their personal items.  I love to see those light bulb moments on their faces when they finally get it and then start enjoying the design process.

Well Iv rambled on enough for now, but I'm very excited to start sharing with you all about my wonderful adventure here at Simply Sewing.  I look forward to your comments and thoughts along the way.

Thanks sew much!
Anne
